With profound sorrow, we share the passing of Christopher (Chris) Douglas Charles, who tragically lost his life as an innocent victim of a traffic accident on the evening of March 22 in Skagit County. Chris is survived by his mother, Jennifer Charles; father, Walter Charles; siblings, Tim Charles and Maria Hamper; and his beloved partner, Hiio-Karonhí:io Delaronde. He was also deeply cherished by his extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends.
A proud member of the Cowichan Tribe (Nanaimo First Nations), Chris was deeply committed to Indigenous health and education. He graduated from Seattle University in 2007 with a degree in Social Work and spent his entire career at the University of Washington's Indigenous Wellness Research Institute (IWRI). Chris was an advocate, a mentor, and a voice for change.
Chris was set to graduate from the University of British Columbia's School of Nursing in May 2025. As both a student and a leader, he was instrumental in shaping ongoing research initiatives focused on making nursing education more inclusive and accessible to students of all learning styles. His passion for ensuring ethical and equitable healthcare will continue to inspire future generations.
To honor Chris' vision and commitment, the family is establishing a memorial fund at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Contributions will support research and initiatives advancing accessibility in nursing education, carrying forward the work that Chris helped to initiate.
